Dreamweaver 4 FTP Setup Instructions

Dreamweaver 4 is a professional standard HTML editor. The following tutorial will explain how to configure and use Dreamweaver version 4.0 to upload files to your Quicksilver website.

Before your begin, make sure you have your Quicksilver webspace username and password.
You should also have enabled your webspace (if not already done). Skip this if you have Windows NT or Premium Linux hosting.

Open the Dreamweaver program

Click on SITE > NEW SITE

Make sure 'Local Info' is selected on the left, and fill in the details below:

Site Name - Give your site a nickname, such as 'Quicksilver'
Local Root Folder - click on the yellow folder button to browse to the folder on your computer where you will be saving your website files.
HTTP Address - you can either leave this blank, or fill in your domain or Quicksilver pages address.

Click on 'Remote Info' on the left

Set 'Access' to FTP

Enter the following settings:

FTP Host - www-upload.quicksilver.net.nz (if you have Windows NT or Premium Linux hosting your hostname will be username.qsihost.co.nz)
Host Directory - /doc/
For Windows NT & Premium Linux Hosting this is /htdocs/

Login - your Quicksilver webspace username. (This is usually, but not always, the same as your Quicksilver Internet username)
Password - your Quicksilver webspace password. (This is usually, but not always, the same as your Quicksilver Internet password)
Use Passive FTP - tick this option if you are behind a network firewall or an ADSL Router.

Click OK

You should now see the window below.

Click on the Connect button (circled in red) to connect to the server.

You should see this:

You are now connected to the Quicksilver web server.

You will see that one side of the window is labelled 'Remote Site' - this is your account on the Quicksilver web server.
One side of the window is labelled 'Local Folder' - this is the website files on your computer.

To download a file (Dreamweaver calls this 'Get'): Select the file on the Remote Site that you want to 'Get'.
Use the GREEN arrow to 'Get' the file. You should now see it in the Local Folder window.

To upload a file (Dreamweaver calls this 'Put'): Select the file on the Local Folder window that you want to 'Put'.
Use the BLUE arrow to 'Put' the file. You should now see it in the Remote Site window.

To create a new folder: click on either the local or remote window (where you want to create the new folder) and click on FILE > NEW FOLDER

You can test your site by visiting http://pages.quicksilver.net.nz/username

Note: if you have Windows NT or Premium Linux hosting you can test your site by visiting http://username.qsihost.co.nz

The main page in every directory, including the home directory, should be called 'index.html'.
